AND THEN THERE WAS SILENCE

God Has Spoken.

Where Real Strength Comes From

“Wisdom strengtheneth the wise more than ten mighty men which are in the city.” — Ecclesiastes 7:19

What Is Happening in the Passage

Solomon pictures a city protected by ten mighty men. They would have looked strong and made people feel safe. Yet Solomon says that wisdom can give a person greater strength than all ten of them.

He is not saying strong people are useless. He is teaching us that there is a kind of strength that cannot be measured by muscles, weapons, money, or numbers. Wisdom helps a person know what is right, make careful choices, resist foolishness, and remain faithful when life becomes difficult.

What This Teaches Us About God

God is not impressed by strength in the same way people are. We often notice who is biggest, strongest, richest, or most powerful. God looks deeper.

He delights in those who fear Him and depend upon Him. The strength He gives may not always change our circumstances, but it can make us steady within them.

Supportive Scripture: “The LORD taketh pleasure in them that fear him, in those that hope in his mercy.” — Psalm 147:11

What This Teaches Us About Us

We often look for things around us to make us feel safe. We may think we would be fine if we had more money, better plans, stronger friends, or fewer problems.

Those things can be helpful, but they can all change. Wisdom teaches us not to make them our confidence. Real strength begins when we learn to trust God and receive His wisdom for the path before us.

Supportive Scripture: “Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.” — Proverbs 3:5

How This Leads Us to Jesus

Jesus did not look powerful by the world’s standards. He did not lead an army or gather great wealth. Yet the Bible calls Him “the power of God, and the wisdom of God.”

Jesus was rejected and crucified, but what looked like weakness was not defeat. He died for sinners, was buried, and rose again. No human power could stop the purpose of God or keep Jesus in the grave.

Those who trust Christ belong to the risen King. Our greatest strength is not found in what we can gather around ourselves, but in the Savior who cannot be defeated.

Supportive Scripture: “Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.” — 1 Corinthians 1:24

What This Means for Our Hearts

You may not always feel strong. There will be times when you cannot fix the problem, control what happens, or make yourself feel brave.

In those moments, ask what is governing your heart. Are you depending only upon what you can see, or are you trusting the Lord and listening to His Word?

God can give wisdom to help you speak carefully, obey when it is difficult, wait patiently, and choose what is right even when you feel weak.

Supportive Scripture: “If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally.” — James 1:5

Words to Know

Wisdom — Knowing God’s truth and learning to live according to it.

Strength — The ability to stand, endure, or act faithfully.

Confidence — What we depend upon and trust to hold us secure.

Fear of the LORD — Reverent trust that recognizes who God is and willingly lives beneath His authority.
