When a Promise Becomes a Trap

Written October 19, 2026

“And I find more bitter than death the woman, whose heart is snares and nets, and her hands as bands: whoso pleaseth God shall escape from her; but the sinner shall be taken by her.” — Ecclesiastes 7:26

What Is Happening in the Passage

Solomon had been searching to understand wisdom and folly. In this verse he describes a sinful woman whose influence is like a snare, a net, and bands that hold someone captive.

He is not saying that women are dangerous. He is warning about temptation that looks inviting but leads someone away from God. Sin often promises something pleasant at first, while hiding where the path will finally lead.

What This Teaches Us About God

God sees the whole path when we can see only what is immediately in front of us. He knows what will help us and what will harm us.

That is why His warnings are good. When God tells us to stay away from something sinful, He is not trying to keep something wonderful from us. He knows the snare we may not yet see, and He faithfully provides a way to escape temptation.

Supportive Scripture: “God is faithful… who will with the temptation also make a way to escape.” — 1 Corinthians 10:13

What This Teaches Us About Us

Our hearts can be attracted to things that are not good for us. Sometimes we think we are strong enough to stay close to temptation without being affected by it.

But sin can slowly begin to control us. Something we thought we could easily leave may become something we do not want to give up.

Wisdom does not ask only, “Do I want this?” It also asks, “Where will this choice lead me?”

Supportive Scripture: “Let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.” — 1 Corinthians 10:12

How This Leads Us to Jesus

Jesus was tempted, but He never sinned. His heart always remained faithful to His Father.

We have not done that. We have listened to wrong desires and sometimes walked willingly toward the very things God warned us about. Jesus came to rescue sinners like us. He died on the cross, shed His blood for our sins, was buried, and rose again.

Jesus does not only forgive us when we have been caught by sin. He gives His people new life and teaches us to walk away from the things that once controlled us.

Supportive Scripture: “If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.” — John 8:36

What This Means for Our Hearts

When you know something is leading you toward sin, do not see how close you can get without falling. Ask God for wisdom to turn away.

Sometimes escape may mean closing something, leaving a place, ending a conversation, telling a trusted adult, or asking someone to help you.

Real freedom is not being able to do whatever we want. Real freedom is being able to follow Christ instead of being controlled by sin.

Supportive Scripture: “The fear of the LORD is to hate evil.” — Proverbs 8:13
