Nehemiah 8:3
“…and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law.”
What Was Happening in the Passage
God’s people stood outside at the Water Gate while Ezra read God’s Word to them for many hours. Even though it was a long time, the people listened carefully. They wanted God’s Word to shape their lives and their homes. God was helping them pay attention so they could understand and obey Him.
What This Teaches Us About God
God loves when His people listen to His Word. He doesn’t hide His truth from us. He helps us understand it. He wants His Word to guide our choices, our families, and our everyday lives.
God’s Word is strong, steady, and full of light. “The entrance of thy words giveth light.” (Psalm 119:130)
When we listen to the Bible, God is teaching us how to live in a way that honors Him.
How This Leads Us to Jesus
Jesus is the perfect Teacher. He doesn’t just read the Bible to us — He helps us understand it inside our hearts. After He rose from the dead, the Bible says, “Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.” (Luke 24:45)
Jesus is the One who opens our minds. Jesus is the One who shines His light in our homes. Jesus is the One who shows us what God is like.
When we listen to the Bible, Jesus is helping us know Him better.
What This Means for Our Hearts
We should listen to the Bible with open hearts, just like the people at the Water Gate. We should want God’s Word to shape our lives and our homes.
When we read the Bible with our families, when we talk about it, when we obey it, Jesus is teaching us. He is helping us grow strong in Him. A home that listens to God’s Word is a home filled with His light.
